A Common Birth Control Option

Every year, more than 500,000 American men undergo a vasectomy procedure

*According to the Urology Care Foundation

What Is a Vasectomy?

A vasectomy is a minimally invasive surgery that involves severing the vas deferens, the small tube responsible for carrying sperm from the testicles to the urethra. When sperm is no longer present in the semen, the chances of sexual intercourse resulting in pregnancy are zero.

Contrary to popular belief, the surgery will not affect your sex life or increase your chances of developing prostate cancer. Although your testes will continue to produce both sperm and semen, the sperm is naturally absorbed by your body.

Outside of abstinence, a vasectomy is the best method of birth control available. It has a failure rate of less than one percent and most pregnancies that occur after the procedure are a result of the patient failing to wait until sperm cells are no longer present in the semen.

How Is a Vasectomy Performed? A Treatment Timeline

Dr. Herrera performs vasectomy procedures out of a local hospital or our Tijuana office. Our office is on the sixth floor of the NewCity Medical Plaza Building in the high-end Zona Rio district. Dr. Herrera performs no-scalpel vasectomies, so the incisions are extremely small and result in minimal scarring. The typical surgery involves several steps:

Treatment is virtually painless and can be completed in 30 minutes or less.
Treatment is virtually painless and can be completed in 30 minutes or less.

Preparation

One of our nurses will shave and clean your scrotum and surrounding areas.

Needle-Free Anesthesia

Dr. Herrera will administer needle-free anesthesia to ensure you are comfortable throughout the entire procedure.

Locating the Vas Deferens

Dr. Herrera will feel for the vas deferens, the small tubes that carry sperm from the testicles to the urethra, under the skin of the scrotum. Once he finds the tubes, he will hold them in place.

Cutting the Vas Deferens

Dr. Herrera will expose the vas deferens by making a very small incision in the scrotum with a hemostat (surgical scissors). He will pull part of the tube through the incision and sever it, removing a small section of the tube. He will seal the severed ends and place them back in the scrotum.

Stitches

Dr. Herrera will conclude the procedure by closing the surgical wound with dissolvable stitches.

“I highly recommend.”

"I am glad I decided to use Dr. Luis Herrera, he was nothing but knowledgeable and understanding when it came to my procedure. He took the time to explain the procedure, and inform me of everything that would take place. No regrets, here, and if I had to do it again, this is my choice, and I highly recommend."

FAQ About Vasectomies

Will my vasectomy hurt?

Dr. Herrera takes every precaution to minimize discomfort during vasectomy procedures. He will apply a topical anesthetic to the treatment site before beginning, so you may just feel a pulling sensation.

What happens to the sperm?

While the sperm will no longer enter your semen, your testes will still produce it. However, with nowhere to go, the sperm will eventually dissolve, and the proteins will be reabsorbed by your body. This won't change your hormone levels or the release of testosterone from the testicles.

Shouldn’t my partner just have her tubes tied?

A tubal ligation is a more expensive, complex, and invasive procedure than a vasectomy, with a longer and more painful recovery. A vasectomy can be performed in-office and with a local anesthetic in about 30 minutes. Vasectomies also have a higher success rate and the lowest risk of unwanted pregnancy among all birth control methods, including tubal ligation.
